ROBERT B. PARKER DIES AT 77; BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF 'SPENSER' PRIVATE-EYE NOVELS
Robert B. Parker, the best-selling author whose long-running "Spenser" private-eye novels updated the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction in the 1970s, has died. He was 77.
Parker died Monday of a heart attack at his home in Cambridge, Mass., said his longtime literary agent, Helen Brann.
"He was at his desk, working on a new book — a new Spenser," Brann said.

LA Times — Author Appreciation (in memoriam)
UNDER ANY NAME DONALD WESTLAKE WAS A GRANDMASTER
His natural ability to observe human behavior and to follow an idea, no matter how bizarre, through to its proper, rightful finish echoed the vision of an architect, the array of moves available only to a chess grandmaster. That he could accomplish all this beneath the veneer of elegant mischief and make it look effortless in the process is all the more astonishing.
LA Times — Authors & Ideas
HOLLYWOOD RARELY DID DONALD WESTLAKE JUSTICE
One of the enigmas in the long and rich career of Donald E. Westlake was that this author of more than 100 novels, many of them popular, accessible and plot-driven works of crime fiction, both grim and comic, received such a spotty handling by Hollywood. |

SUSAN BRAUN, our esteemed leader for the Mystery Book Club at the Barnes & Noble in the Woodland Hills Promenade, who has led a mystery book club at neighborhood book stores for many, many years, has removed to Washington State. Our May meeting with her was our last. While she had given us plenty of notice of the plans she and her husband had made to buy a home in the northwest it still came as a shock to us all. She has told us that she has already hooked up with a new book club up there and will continue to stay connected to us when she returns to southern California to visit family and electronically. |
